Legal and Illegal Slaughterhouses
Slaughter houses are places where animals are killed for consumption as food for humans. Illegal slaughterhouses are those that are not built legally, or slaughter of cows is being done in these houses. UP has a total of 38 slaughterhouses (meat-processing plants), both legal and illegal. The reason being that due to widespread killing and smuggling of meat, the livestock levels are lowered, and there is the illegal slaughtering of cows in these houses. Also, the illegally constructed slaughterhouses need to be shut down.
Points against the decision
On this issue, a debate is going on, where the persons connected with slaughter business are of the view that this will affect the economy and business as UP is the largest exporter of buffalo meat in the country.
The duly registered slaughter houses are opposing the BJP’s decision to close these abattoirs on the ground that they are killing buffaloes not cows and they are using modern machines to improve the quality of meat. And hence, the government should pay attention towards the closing of illegal butcheries and not the legal ones.
Another opposition claims that this step will create unemployment as thousands are people are employed in these slaughter houses and the closing of these, will leave them jobless.
Moreover, crores of rupees have been invested in machines for the improvement of meat quality and many machines are bought for a huge amount of bank loan. All these will go waste without reason. These slaughter houses are working according to Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) rules, dealing with goat and sheep meat only.
Finally, it can be concluded that the Yogi Adityanath government in UP is trying to accomplish its election manifesto by announcing the closing of these butcheries and this decision is generating mixed response among the public.
People who follow RSS and Hindutav are supporting this scheme of UP Government because they were running illegally, but the people linked with this business are opposing. So, as per the Yogi Adityanath Yojna to shut down Buchad Khane, it is being done only for illegal Slaughterhouses – not the legal buchad khane. So, those who are linked to legal buchad khana need not worry.
