Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Yojana – Medicines at Lower Prices

Health is the most significant asset for a human being that decides not only his future but also the future of the nation. Healthy individuals work better for the progress of the country, and because of this reason, the government of India took charge to ensure public health. With this initiative, the Central Government Scheme has been stated as started Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Scheme on 25 November 2008.

The Government has been implementing various measures so that people who can’t afford to purchase quality medicines, find access to these. For the last few years, the Indian government has reduced excise duty, fixed the amount of VAT at 4% on these medicines and controlled the price of these drugs with the help of National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA). But still persons living below the poverty line cannot afford branded medicines and to solve this problem, the government launched
Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Scheme.

Purpose of PMJAY – Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Yojna

The motive of this Indian Government Scheme is to make available unbranded good quality generic medicines to the public at reasonable prices through Jan Aushadhi Stores. The role of state governments along with the various stakeholders is fixed for the implementation of the scheme.

The first thing that had been done by this campaign to make this Indian government plan successfully was to make people aware about the efficacy of these low-priced Generic medicines.
This campaign is inviting youths to open Jan Aushadhi store in their locality with no interest loans and credit facility.

BPPI (Bureau of Pharma PSUs of India) has been established on 1st Dec’ 2008 with the purpose of coordinating generic drugs marketing through the Jan Aushadhi stores, screening the activities of Jan Aushadhi stores in their area and many other functions.

In the last, it can be concluded that this Sarkari Yojna will change the prescription principles of doctors, production of drugs by the manufacturers and retail marketing by pharmacy stores. It will modify the medicine market from commercialization of high cost branded drugs to cost effective generic medicine for the sake of poor people who can now afford appropriate treatment of their chronic ailments. And, the fact about Generic medicines is that they are as effective as the medicines created under a brand name because the salt used is the same.
